Event Description:

Much of black history, as recorded in Western art, is summarized by the traditional depiction of figures in one of three roles: enslaved, in servitude, or impoverished. Beyond this limited social order, however, lies a people of dignity and strength whose survival is nothing less than miraculous. Hayden Visiting Artist and New Haven–resident Titus Kaphar, M.F.A. 2006, discusses his continued exploration of that history through the practice of visual quotation in his own work.
