Event Time:

Location:
Davies Auditorium See map
10 Hillhouse Avenue
New Haven, CT 6511
Event Description:

Math Mornings is a series of public lectures aimed at bringing the joy and variety of mathematics to students and their families. Speakers from Yale and elsewhere talk about aspects of mathematics they find fascinating or useful. Recent talks have included “Points, Lines, Puzzles,” “How to Grow Fractals,” and “The Many Faces of Euler’s Formula.” Before each lecture, Yale students lead math demonstrations and games. Refreshments will be served.
This week, Professor Stefan Steinerberger from Yale University presents “How to Get the Most Out of Circles.”
If you have a loopy string, how would you arrange it to capture the most area? Already in ancient times people knew that it had to be the circle but if you think about it a bit more, it is not really quite so easy to see why that is the case. We will travel through all of history starting in the ancient kingdom of Carthage (with layovers in Switzerland, the animal kingdom and the realm of computer programs) and discover step-by-step why the circle is really the nicest shape there is.
Parking Information: Street parking is available on Hillhouse, Trumbull, Grove, and Temple Streets. On Sundays, metered parking is free. In addition, free parking is available in most Yale lots on weekends. Please pay attention to signage.
THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. No registration required.
